Are you ready for some football?
Football makes me fat. Every year I gain 7-10 lbs between September and January. I
used to think it was the Holiday eating season but last year I took it easy on the big bird
and gravy and I still gained weight.
So I did an investigation and discovered something profound. Apparently laying on the
couch all day watching football is not exactly a metabolism booster. Go figure?
This prompted me to make a lifestyle change. No, I’m not getting rid of my T.V. I
decided to get a BMR test. This shows me what my basal metabolic rate is. I figured if I knew exactly how many calories I could consume in a “non-activity day” I could adjust
my Sunday diet so I wouldn’t gain weight during the football season.
The test is pretty simple. You breathe into the BMR test machine for 10 minutes. The
machine measures the amount of oxygen you inhale and calculates the amount of
oxygen left when you exhale. This apparently gives you your base metabolism rate.
My test result showed my BMR is currently 1,800 calories. I was a little surprised at the
result as I thought I could put away between 2,500 and 3,000 calories a day easily (and
still have room for dessert). Apparently not. The fitness expert explained that a person’s
individual metabolism can vary at different times. Different factors like work load, sleep
routine and aging can change a persons BMR. I thanked him for reminding me.
Armed with this knowledge I am prepared for the year’s football season. The calorie
consumption bar has been set. I now know my body’s “over and under”.
Knowing the over and under on certain things can make your job a lot easier too.
Gaming law is one of those areas. Trying to make the gray areas a little more black and
white seems to be an ongoing challenge.
Advantage play is a hot topic right now. A controversial book has been written by Las
Vegas Attorney Bob Nersesian that looks at the way casinos deal (or mis-deal) with
skilled players. Bob will be the featured guest on Casino Guys Online this Wednesday
Oct 4 where we’ll hopefully clear up a little of the gray in this area.
Another gray area is the law in the U.K involving the use of roulette computers to gain
an edge over the house. Although these type of devices are illegal in most parts of the
world, apparently they are not there (see link below) In the U.K. the Gambling
Commission has basically said the casinos can police themselves. Hmhh...I guess that is
pretty black and white?
This month we have a featured article from William F. Bonar quite aptly titled “The
Catwalk” on this our first anniversary of the Catwalk. Bill gives us his take on the
changing role of surveillance overthe years.
